Brazil - a country of happy people

BTRUSSIA were able to talk to Edwin Suikerbuik from Brazil during the Santos tournament.

BTRUSSIA: Edwin, Brazil make a lot of tournaments of the highest categories and attracts the best players in the world, despite the distance. How do you think, what is the most attractive thing for them in Brazil?

Edwin: I believe for the professional players it is interesting to play the tournaments because of high ranking points can be gained in a period that it is wintertime in Europa and there are no tournaments in this period in Europe. Besides that Brazil attracts people because of the beauty of the country and its beautiful happy people.

BTRUSSIA: Brazil is one of the most progressive countries in the world in the development of beach tennis, how did you manage to achieve this?

Edwin: First of all we are blessed with 8000 km of beaches in Brazil and beautiful weather during the whole year which makes it attractive for practicing sports at the beach and Brazilians love this. So the number of people playing beach tennis increased very fast. When the Brazilian tennis federation decided to organize beach tennis in 2013 the sport became more organized, having more tournaments with rules applied and referees working. The federation started organizing offices for referees and teachers which helped a lot as well. Besides organizing a national ranking system for all categories from professional to all amature categories.

BTRUSSIA: How many people in Brazil engaged in beach tennis? What are your plans for the future development?

Edwin: Around 50000 people practice beach tennis in Brazil and this number is increasing with around 50% this year. Our plans are to organize this development with training programs. For players, teachers, referees and a special program for our top athletes. We contracted a new coach for the national team, Narck Rodrigues, and he started this week with a special training program for talents and top players.

BTRUSSIA: This year Russian national team came to the tournament in Santos. Is it still cool relations between russians and brasilian players after your defeat in Moscow?

Edwin: I was very happy to meet the Russian team at the airport in São Paulo. It is really good to see that they come and play here. Of course ir is cool the relationship. On court you have to be rivals but of the court it has to be friendship. This is what beach tennis is about.

BTRUSSIA: Who are the favorites here?

Edwin: At the mens draw we have the favorites like Calbucci/Antomi Ramos, your Russian teams and the brazilian teams Marcus /Thales who play in their home Town as well as Vinicius Font/ Ramon Guedes. At the womens draw number one favorite is Biglmaier/Diaz. Then there are other strong doubles like the twinsisters from France Hoarau/Hoarau and Joana Cortez with Júlia Chubarova. Outsiders like another Russian team or brazilian or french team should be taken um account as well.
